It’s a cane. There’s a chair folded into the side of it. And that’s the least interesting thing about it.
I’ve handled a lot of strange gear over the years. Nothing ever gave me goosebumps like this.
She Wasn’t Leaning On It
We were in Budapest for a meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. I was leading the Coalition’s activities then – dozens of partner nations in the room, three days of hard conversations about ISIS finances and foreign fighters and who was actually going to pay for what.
One of the diplomats on my team was Hungarian. Sharp, unflappable, the kind of officer who makes a coalition of 89 nations look easy. Her mother ran the Hungarian National Museum. I’d met her mother once before – Marrakech, another Coalition meeting, maybe ten minutes on the margins. Long enough to be polite. Not long enough to expect anything.
That evening we went to dinner, and she came.
With a cane.
She wasn’t using it. That’s the first thing I noticed. She was carrying it, the way you carry something you intend to hand to somebody.
Turns out she’d remembered. She’d gone to her collector friends and asked one question: what’s the rarest thing in this country that this American should see before he leaves?
The Cane Is the Costume
At a glance it’s a walking stick. Steamed linden wood, curved hook handle, rubber tip, aluminum rings at the joints. The kind of thing that leans in the corner of a coffee shop for two hours and nobody looks at once.
It’s a single-shot 16-gauge shotgun.
The wood is a sleeve. Underneath is a smoothbore barrel, just over a meter end to end, with the lock hidden inside. No maker’s mark anywhere on it. No serial number, no proof stamp, nothing. Somebody built this and made very sure it couldn’t be traced back to a bench.
And then there’s the seat.
That triangle of leather and canvas folds out into a stool. A real one. You unfold it, you sit, and now you’re an elderly person resting outside a church or across from an apartment building for as long as you feel like resting.
I’ve called it a lot of things since that night. My favorite is the one I said out loud at the table: it’s a chair for a geriatric assassin.
Everybody laughed. Then everybody stopped, because you sit with it for ten seconds and you realize how good the idea is.
Nobody Watches Old People
Here’s what got me, and it isn’t the barrel.
A cane doesn’t just avoid attention – it repels it. You see someone with a cane and your brain files them under slow, harmless, look away. Then the design adds a chair, so that person can sit for hours where standing around would get them noticed.
The whole thing is built on one insight about human beings: we don’t watch old people.
Somebody in a workshop understood that better than most intelligence officers I’ve worked with.
Then I Read the Paperwork
The cane came to me as Hungarian. That’s what I called it for a long time.
Then I read the expertise that came with it. The military historian in Budapest who took it apart says the workmanship is Soviet – the canvas weave, the rubber, the way the metal ages. He classifies it as a concealed weapon of the Soviet services and notes that in thirty years in the trade, no second example has ever surfaced.
So: found in Hungary, almost certainly built east of it, and as far as anyone can tell there’s exactly one.
The firing pin’s been removed. It can’t fire and never will again, and it still took the better part of forever to get here. Turns out “don’t worry, the firing pin’s out” doesn’t move a customs officer along the way you’d hope.

The Best Show-and-Tell I’ve Ever Done
Yesterday I hosted the young professionals from the Hungarian American Coalition’s HYPE program through my nonprofit, IN Network: The National Security Academy. We mentor young people into national security careers.
This was the first year I had the cane.
I passed it around and let all of them hold it, unfold the seat, feel how well balanced it is. And I told them what I’m telling you: the artifact isn’t the point. Somebody sat down and thought hard about how an ordinary person moves through an ordinary street, then built an object that lived inside that assumption. That’s the job. Not gadgets. Understanding people well enough to predict what they’ll refuse to notice.
A woman who’d spoken with me once, for ten minutes, in another country, went hunting for this because her daughter served on my team and she wanted me to see something extraordinary before I left hers. Yesterday I put it in the hands of a room full of young Hungarian Americans who’ll spend their careers on the same problems her daughter and I did.
Thirty years in this business and that’s the part I kept. Life is about people.

This is fascinating - the serious consideration of what people routinely ignore. I could swear, however, that I saw something similar at the National Museum of Art in Washington DC a couple of months ago. It was not as sleek but it was a mobility assistance device used by an elderly woman. She was able to turn it into a small stool which she used while looking at the paintings. I will watch out for it now. BTW - I saw you on the Black Man Spy cast with Malcom Nance re: events in Ceuta. Great to hear about your work.
